TP PODCAST #103: DJ Lag

The rise of South Africa’s gqom as one of the foremost genres in dance music can be traced back to one innovator: Durban’s DJ Lag. Widely credited as the pioneer of the form, it’s Lag who is responsible for gqom’s distinctive hard edged, bass heavy sound known colloquially as ‘uthayela.’ This year, nearly a decade into his career and after a stratospheric rise that’s seen him work with the likes of Beyoncé, DJ Lag released his debut album Meeting With The King. It’s a remarkable victory lap, a recognition of the path he’s forged and a push toward the future for an artist who’s instinct is to disrupt what’s come before. We had the incredible opportunity to speak with DJ Lag about the making of Meeting With The King. Presented in two parts, this special two part edition of our podcast will explore each track on the album in depth, with DJ Lag giving us insight into the inspirations, processes, and challenges of making his debut album. Listen to Part 1 below.
